I have a J.D. 4100 (Gear). I use it primarily for loader work on fill, stones etc. I recently noticed that the left piston, attached to the loader drips hydralic fluid. There is also a black rubber O-Ring that has detached from the piston sleeve and has slipped down the piston (when I raise the bucket up, this ring slides down the piston. When I lower the bucket back down, it stays at that point on the piston rather than retract with the arm. I realize that I am using the wrong terms here but I hope you get the point.
How expensive of a repair is this going to be and how critical is it to get fixed right away? Thanks for your help. Kevin

Kevin, It sounds as if the "o-ring" you see sliding up and down the cylinder rod is probably a part that is put there by the factory to prevent paint from getting on the seal. As far as the leak goes, If your tractor is still in warranty, then you definately want to get it fixed before the warranty runs out. If it is already past warranty then it is up to you when to repair it. It will likely get worse, but it shouldn't do any further damage to the cylinder. It probably only needs a seal kit. ....

It does sound like a rod seal, which mostly serves to wipe the rod as it retracts back into the cylinder. It's curious if it came completely out of it's housing, and it should be replaced. The ends that house the rod seal are removable on many cylinders. I think the seal on some cylinders could be described more like packing than an o-ring, and can be tightened down like on a water faucet.
At least I think I've heard that. Even so, I don't think repairing a rod seal is going to do much for a leak. There is another o-ring seal further in the rod end of the cylinder that is likely passing oil. ....

I dont know if any one stated this clearly but the cleaning ring/seal prevents dirt from entering the cylinder and damaging the pressure seals. This is what might have happened to your seal. ....
